Past technicians used deep body tattoo inks containing heavy metals (iron oxides, carbon black) implanted too deeply into the reticular dermis. As light filtered through the deep skin, optical refraction created a cool, greyish-blue cast.
The Revolution of Bioresorbable Pigments
